Tax agent regulation

You can apply to register as a tax agent through one of the six options provided below depending on your qualifications and experience. Select an option most suited to you and check if you meet the requirements under that option.

Qualification and experience

Primary qualification

Degree or post-graduate award (from an Australian tertiary institution) or a degree or award that is Board approved (from an equivalent institution) in accounting. 

Relevant experience

Equivalent of one year full-time experience in past 5 years. See Relevant experience for tax agents 

Board approved courses

Requirements 

  • Australian taxation law – 2 Board approved units, one of which can be at an introductory level  
  • Commercial law – 3 Board approved core units 
  • Tax Agent Services Act 2009 (TASA), including the Code of Professional Conduct (Code) – 1 Board approved unit. This unit may be covered in the Australian taxation law unit that you completed.  

Select ‘Add unit’ and enter details.  As you add units, any qualifications that the unit satisfies will be moved from the Qualifications remaining list to the Qualification present list. 

Note: If the course is more than 10-years-old, you may need to provide additional information.

Qualification and experience

Primary qualification

Degree or post-graduate award (from an Australian tertiary institution) or degree or award that is Board approved (from an equivalent institution) in a relevant discipline other than accounting 

Relevant experience

Equivalent of one year full-time experience in past 5 years. See Relevant experience for tax agents

Requirements 

Depending on the type of tax agent services you intend to provide, the following Board approved courses may be required: 

  • Basic accounting principles – 1 Board approved unit 
  • Australian taxation law – 2 Board approved units, one of which can be at an introductory level  
  • Commercial law – 3 Board approved core units 
  • Tax Agent Services Act 2009 (TASA), including the Code of Professional Conduct (Code) – 1 Board approved unit. This unit may be covered in the Australian taxation law unit that you completed.

Diploma or higher award in accounting (from a registered training organisation or equivalent institution)

Relevant experience

Equivalent of 2 years full-time experience in past 5 years. See Relevant experience for tax agents

  • Australian taxation law – 2 Board approved units, one of which can be at an introductory level  
  • Commercial law – 3 Board approved core units

Primary qualification

At least Certificate IV Financial Services in bookkeeping or accounting 

Relevant experience

1,400 hours in past 4 years – see Relevant experience for BAS agents 

Board approved courses

Requirements 

  • Basic GST/BAS taxation principles (or GST/BAS course) 
  • Tax Agent Services Act 2009 (TASA), including the Code of Professional Conduct (Code) – 1 Board approved unit. This unit may be covered in the GST/BAS course that you completed.
